Visiting a Historical Site

Today, we decided to visit Jefferson Davis memorial, a house, museum, and graveyard preserved by his late wife.

The way of life back then was so difficult, you really realize how good we have it these days. We have lighter clothing, air conditioning, running water, smaller property to maintain, lighter weapons, etc.

Not only did we get to tour the house and grounds, we were able to try on period clothing if we wanted. I tried on a hoop skirt after reading that they were made with hoops or “bones”. They were adjustable. Mine was broken from so many try-ons, but I managed long enough for a picture.

Too bad I was feeling pretty miserable at this point (me and my issues) because the skirt even made my t-shirt look fancy!!

I love the guided tour because she explains so much about the time period, what the hurricanes did time after time, and the misunderstanding about the man in general.

He was evidently not portrayed properly in history books. He did so much for his country, he deserves to be memorialized, and he was thanks to his wife.

I love the name given to the house, Beauvoir, which means “beautiful view”. Indeed it is, because the view is the ocean.

I’m going to present a gallery and try to caption as many as I can remember the details. Enjoy!

The only reason the house is still standing, according to the tour guide, was because it was constructed with cypress and heart pine. The floors are original to the house, and have withstood 18 hurricanes! That includes Katrina, which wiped out so much of the other properties on the grounds.

I hope if you’re ever in Biloxi, you check out this wonderful memorial, because your support helps keep it maintained as it should be.
