My Heart Belongs to the Ocean

Edisto beach

Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

I was born in Biloxi, Mississippi so my belief is that the beach is in my blood.

Although I’d been to a few beaches in my youth, the summer vacations once we were married took us to Port Aransas, Tx. and it was there that my love affair really bloomed.

I spent part of my military career in Ft Carson, Colorado. While us was there, and every mountain type visit I’ve made since then has been superb, however, I’m not a fan of cold weather. So, the beach wins.

Now, after visiting North Carolina on this leg of our journey as full-time RVers, I know I can absolutely have both! We didn’t get to visit the beaches on this particular trip, but that’s just another reason to come back!

I have seen the Rockies, The Smokies, Mt Lemmon in Arizona, and some in California and I’ve enjoyed them all. I’ve also been to the mountains in Arkansas when we went to Eureka Springs. It was heavenly. Yet my heart keeps pulling me back to the beach.

I’ve seen the gulf Coast beaches, the east coast beaches (myrtle beach and Edisto Beach), Port Aransas, Galveston, and Corpus Christi, and a bit of San Diego and Long Beach in California.

Maybe it’s that I’m more familiar with beach life and the things I long to do there, the things that make me happy and calms me that make me pick the beach. Maybe it’s the way the waves mesmerize me. All I know is that it’s my happy place and to me it’s absolutely fascinating and so full of opportunity.

Those who know me know I’m a crafty kind of girl and I use materials from the beach to make my crafts. I love warm temperatures over cold, so there is another reason.

Okay, maybe I’m still on the fence, but I do know I won’t be happy unless water is close. Good thing I’m so easily adaptable! Florida is next on our agenda, so maybe it will be the deciding factor.

We are leaving South Carolina tomorrow to head for Jupiter, Florida for the month of December. After that, we will be at a place near Orlando, Florida until March. Will we find our forever home there, or keep searching? Stay tuned to find out!

  1. I love the beach and falling asleep to the sound of waves, but over the decades I have learned that I am a mountain fan. I see waves in mountain formations, so that’s a bit of both, but mostly my heart feels free when mountains are in view.

    1. They are just as peaceful as I found out in North Carolina. I think as long as water was near, I’d be ok.

  3. I’ll visit the beach in the fall if possible. I enjoy hearing the waves hit the shore during a small storm and walking in the wet sand. But…I am a mountain girl if given an option. Running mountain stream and a fireplace with plenty of wood. In my younger day skiing would have been on tap but no longer…I’ll just watch others enjoy the snow while I hold a warm cup of cocoa.
