Left or right brained? Colossians (2:16-19)

False teachings like what legalism and mysticism teach are compulsive, subjective, and emotional.

I tend to be more right-brained, because I’m a creative. The challenge then, is to not let it veer over into mysticism. Yet I can also be a bit left-brained because I think more scientifically, logically, and strategic…which could get me into trouble with legalism.

What we are supposed to do is trust in God because we already have all we need! It doesn’t matter what kind of brain you have, left, right, or a little of both. Because the world is not black and white.

Point one is that we need to stay away from Compulsive or legalistic Christianity. (2:16-17)

Point two is to stay away from Subjective or Emotionsl Christianity. (2:18-19)

I was raised in the Catholic Church. Growing up this way we had rigid rules, and followed strict adherence to those rules. There was more emphasis on symbolism than the teaching of the Bible. This was an example of lifestyle legalism, although I knew nothing else.

When I married, we got away from the churches we greew up with and were baptized in the Christian church we belonged to at the time. We should have never left, but when our pastor did, the church was so divided, that we went and found a Merhodist church we liked and stayed there many years until it too started becoming divided due to “wokeness.”

Our laws and our culture are different than the times during the Old Testament and now we live by the New Testament teachings. Old Jewish laws are not followed here. But what is is living by faith and believing that God sent Jesus to die for our sins. That is all we need.

It doesn’t matter what we eat, or how we dress. It doesn’t matter what sort of jobs we have or who our friends and associates are. What matters is that we live our life to please God.

Mystics have a false humility by claiming to have secret, hidden knowledge -not scriptural but subjective ideas. They even claim that God speaks to them personally. Pastor John said God may convict you, yet He doesn’t speak to you directly.

He did say its difficult for most of us to accept the idea of Grace. That is the era that we live in though, so we must learn to accept that we have all that we need by the grace of God.

Forgive others and let go of bitterness. Live by the Scripture and make the right choices.

Personally, I need to make better choices. Like watching a Christian movie more often. I watched a good one today that really brought me to tears. It was older; 2013, but it’s message was unmistakeable.

Check it out on YouTube sometime. Its called “Finding Normal” and briefly, its about a city girl who, by the way, is a doctor, that winds up in a small town, which by its love and faith in God ended up changing the entire course of this girl’s life.

I choose to watch more of these – YouTube has tons of inspirational, faith-based movies for free!

Let’s all choose to accept grace and reject the false teachings that Satan tries to block our path with. Live by faith, pray daily, and read the scriptures which have all the truths you will ever need to know.

  1. This was a really good message. You are watching YouTube movies because I know that they are free. The people that directed the movie that Christine and I are going to see tomorrow is called “War Room.” I watched it several years ago and I’m not sure if YouTube has it or not but it is a good one!

    1. Sorry, saying “woke” is intellectually lazy. It would have been better to say that I don’t think the Bible affirms that way of thing about sin.

      1. Not sure I understand. he was clear about sins…and said those without were to cast the first stone. Thus shaming those who are busily judging everyone else and not themselves. Instead of railing against other’s sins, I truly wish more preachers, pastors, etc would simply share the message of Jesus and not that of his human disciples as utter truth. We all know that humans are fallible. Not all of the Bible is “correct” as so very much has changed through mistranslations over the centuries. To get the closest to a “true” Bible, one should use the greek orthodox which has not changed in over 2000 years.

      2. No sinful man can be justified through works but by faith alone. That is my conviction. I believe in the gospel. Turning back to the law after receiving justification from Christ is a sin.
