My main purpose for wanting to come to South Carolina, despite spending part of my early childhood, was to see the place one of my favorite authors writes best selling books about. Edisto Island.

We are about thirty minutes from Edisto Beach, and it was a beautiful trip over there. Again, I’m amazed at the diversity of plants and trees, palms thriving in woods made up of pines, Magnolias, oaks, and others. But my favorite is seeing the Spanish moss dripping from the massive oak trees. It’s everywhere!

Spanish moss grow primarily on live oaks and bald cypress…but can grow on most trees if conditions are right. It prefers warm climates and humid conditions.

Of course, you know me, I had to see the beach first. This time of year it isn’t as popular, we had it all to ourselves, but still cool to see. Good shells, rough sand, and rougher surf than I’m used to. I dipped my feet and it was cold, but not icy cold.

It was cloudy but so bright, we look a bit washed out. However, we got the required selfie. ☺️

I could tell the surf was a lot rougher than I’m used to, not that I was going in. The temp at the time was about 70 degrees.

We then visited a gift shop where I inquired about C. Hope Clark, who writes the Edisto mysteries and the Craven series. She directed us to the local book store so we headed there next.

As you can see, we made it, but I was disappointed to find she won’t be here to do another book signing until next month. Not that I have any physical books to sign. I read all her books on my IPad. Honestly, I just wanted to meet her. 😉

We enjoyed the trip over and driving around off the beach, I could totally see and imagine where she came up with the material in the books. One area on Jungle Road was just as she describes it. The beach houses and bungalows are enveloped by so many palms and other trees and plants, it looks like the jungle! I also noted the other street names and recognized Seabrook, which is one of her characters. I could almost picture her on the balcony of one of the bungalows, drink in hand and writing her next novel.
If I had more time here, I might fall in love myself. But I have so much more to see. It definitely isn’t as popular as some other SC beaches, like Myrtle Beach, but we don’t have time to go there either.

I’m hoping we see the many plantations, museums and other attractions in Charleston. More to come!
