SoCS -A Bad Smell

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “What’s that smell?” Write the first thing that comes to mind. Enjoy!

A few days ago, Dave and I had gone out to the bus where it is in storage to put down some trim and start the backsplash.

We pulled into Kevin’s driveway and as we got out to go inside I thought, “what’s that smell?” it smelled of death so I thought maybe a mouse died under the recycle bin, which is also on the driveway.

A few days went by and in hat time we had some really heavy rains. The day it cleared, Dave went out to go meet the generator repair guy at the bus. When he got home he told me that somehow there was a very dead, very flat opossum on the driveway. I remembered seeing something that looked like an old pile of rags the last time I’d gone to pt. Sure enough, that had been it. The only way you could see what it was was by the tiny coiled up tail sticking out of the mess.

Not that I got very close. Dave cleaned it up this morning finally when it became evident that my brother wasn’t going to. We started trying to figure out how it happened. We questioned Kevin if he remembered running over anything, and he said he didn’t. We never did either, and the position it was on the driveway was in the front of and in the center of where we parked the Jeep when Kevin is not home.

So Kevin decided with all the rain, maybe it simply washed up there. So supposedly it floated, flat up the driveway somehow? I’m not buying it…what do you think happened?

  1. Hard to tell what might have happened. Sad though, opossums are pretty cool little animals.

  2. Funny, I’d read this after watching a segment about a possum named Carl who likes to play dead. He does this so often, he’s become a bit of a celebrity online.

I don’t buy the version of the story your brother (your brother, right? or son?) is selling. Someone hit that possum.

Poor thing. I bet the smell was rancid, though. Ick!

    1. Yes ma’am! Like any long dead thing. I felt bad for him too.
