SoCS – Contest Entry

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “pore/poor/pour.’” Use any of them or use them all. Bonus points if you fit ’em all into your post. Have fun!

A few days ago, I poured my heart onto the page and write a story based on the prompt of something I’m grateful for. I called it A New Lifestyle and it was accepted into the contest for $250.00.

I hope my writing isn’t viewed as poor by the judges, and if nothing else, just to “place” would be a victory, although we could always use the money! I’m sharing it with you today, to get your honest opinion. Feel free to leave critical comments, and honest feedback.

Yesterday, as we were killing time, waiting to pick the dogs up from the groomer, we revisited the place where we saw the massive stone near the Dolores Lake.

Remember this picture?

We walked further up the trail, but what we wanted to see was much further and higher, and both of us decided it was not in my wheelhouse yesterday. Plus, it looked about to pour rain down on us, so off we went to snag the dogs.

It never did rain, but clouds came over and made it lovely to enjoy sitting outside for a while before dinner. Dave accidentally left the grill brush and basket inside his new grill, but caught his error before too much damage was done. Poor guy, he just forgets to check everything thoroughly before starting something.

I miss looking at the pond, but not walking up the hills. I miss getting to use internet and watching tv, but we are getting more of the great outdoors because of it. We get our steps in, we have access to the river, the lake, hiking trails and more. If I could just play music without the internet, I would be a happy camper.

I’m looking forward to my Echo Basin buddies to come visit for a game of Mahjong soon, and maybe dinner afterward! I also miss connections and have been calling people every day because I hate that feeling of loss. Of course, I have Dave, but you know me. I like a network of friends and family I can talk to.

Chris, my youngest, is being evacuated to Miami Beach, Florida to escape the coming hurricane and start two new jobs for Cotton. I’m so happy they view his safety and recognize his talent and work ethic at this new company. He has such a bright future ahead if he keeps his head on straight. Pray 🙏 with me that he does. Money can change people. I don’t want him to get in trouble.

I could talk all day, but its time to go get the laundry out of the dryer. So I will await your opinions and feedback and hopefully, I will have the internet long enough to read your comments. Have a blessed weekend! 🤗

  1. So I like and commented on your story! I hope that you win the $250! When will you know how you did? The more people have read it, like it, and comment win or no? I really loved your story and I was not have changed anything!

    1. Thank you, Stephanie, but Tre has a good point. The essay was about what I’m grateful for, and maybe I didn’t expound on that enough.

      1. I thought that is what you are doing. I will have to go back and look at it. Can you go back and resubmit? I hope so.

  2. Your piece for entry actually read more like a non-fictional day-to-day itinerary rather than what you’re actually grateful for. There wasn’t much mention of gratitude, just your breakdown in what you do with the new lifestyle and how you do it.

If this were an essay contest about your daily goings-on with your new lifestyle, I’d say you hit the mark, but the theme was/is, what you’re grateful for.

You definitely let the reader into your life and the change to RV living if they already do not follow you or know about it, and that’s a good thing. With this piece, they know why you love it, what you do, how you spend your days, and the importance of those things to you.

    I wish you much luck!

    1. Thank you for the feedback! I tried to cover my gratitude in the first paragraph but obviously didn’t spend enough time on that. Thanks for the advice!

    1. Yes ma’am, getting to reply and write here is a privilege now. Luckily, internet is spotty even if TV is impossible. I hate that I’m missing the Olympics, but I got to see the girls and Simone bring home the gold. I’m happy.

  5. Kym, I read your story and will try to access it thru sign in tomorrow. It’s an enjoyable read for a former RVer. Two years of FT with Class A is wonderful. 💛💞
