Colossians (4:2-6)
The Power of Words
Have you ever stopped to think about how powerful just a word can be?
I. Words are powerful in prayer. (4:2-3)
Praying is not just an opportunity for your relief, they are also an obligation. Praying shows responsibility to God. If and when you pray, God changes you.
I’ve begun to experience this (or notice it more) in my own life. I can pray for a safe, smooth ride home and I may not get that exactly, but we got home safely.
There are many more examples I can give, but I’m sure you’ve all experienced it for yourselves. I pray for my kids all the time. That they safe, or keep their jobs, or find that house…whatever. It works!
Submission to God helps our mental health as well. If I pray in the morning in thanks to God for getting me through another night, and then to have a good day, I feel so much better, because I know He will hear it.
I may not know how, or why, but I’ve seen it too many times to doubt it. It’s like when you feel like you have a guardian angel. Maybe. But more than likely it’s God answering your prayer(s).
Anxious? Pray. It’s the best medicine for that. Letting go of worrying is so freeing! I’ve been trying to practice it more and more.
II. Words are powerful in proclaiming God’s word. (4:3-4)
Have you ever thought of where you would be if you hadn’t given your life to Jesus? Pastor John calls this his “anti-testimony”
I don’t like to think of that because I was walking down the wrong road. I might have become a drug addict or an alcoholic, and I’d certainly be married to the wrong man.
I’ve always believed, but I never realized how much prayer had been helping me all along until I started studying the word of God and being more intent about my prayers. Now I find I’m praying all the time!
III. Words are powerful in witnessing to the lost. Be a good example. Pay your bills on time. Walk in wisdom. Keep your promises. Behaving well is part of your testimony. (4: 5-6)
Types of prayer
Inquiry, petition, intercession, narration, confession, and more.
Some find it helpful to keep a prayer journal. I have one, but I need to use it more. We all get busy, but please take the time to pray. Thanking God for your blessings, asking him for what you need.
Trust me, your life will start to change. Pray more, worry less, that’s my motto lately!
