Was Taken Over by the Lord
Today was special.
Pastor Kevin had a sermon ready to go and then zilch! Like lightning struck his iPad, it must have vanished!
So instead, we had a blessing on the school, it’s students and all of the employees. Then, he invited whoever wanted to share their testimony of faith to come down and tell it.
Margaret, seen as our matriarch, went first but stayed in her spot because she was not feeling well today. She has known of the Lord almost her entire life, yet it wasn’t until her twenties that she gave her life to God. She is the best example of a true Christian I can think of. She also leads our prayer group on Wednesday mornings.
Next was a rough one because she cried through the entire thing but basically she has had a rough few years. Everything from divorce to having her kids taken away (her husband turned them against her) and she turned it all over to God.
Next was Jennifer’s husband Larry who we all know has a terminal disease but gave his life to God a long time ago because of Jennifer. She is another truly Christian woman, yet sometimes they come across as attention-seeking. I know that sounds bad but they kind of dominate Sunday school hour.
The last allowed to the front to share her testimony was Candy Usher who’s book I just finished. She told a reimagined story of Ruth in her book. Her testimony was short and also spoke of a divorce and I think she is raising her two boys by herself. She teaches classes and I see her involved a lot at the church.
As I sat listening and crying a half box of tissues I tried to think of what I would have said.
Was my testimony that I’ve known Jesus since I was three and my grandmother gave me my first Bible and taught me the 23rd Psalm? No. Was it when David and I were baptized and the same time in our Christian church back when we lived in Haltom City? No, I don’t think even that really made it sink in. What I do remember is that something was said that made me know that I had to start reading and studying the Word, had to truly walk with God Every. Single.Day. First thing before I do anything else is His. And that’s how it still is and I continue to mature in my faith because it is a lifelong process.
Maybe that’s not a true testimony in my pastor’s eyes because I can’t say exactly what I heard that made me hunger for the Word. Maybe because I didn’t have that crying out to God moment where I told Him I can’t do this alone. I didn’t have to hit rock bottom to go to God. Does everyone find God that way? I’m curious.
In my military history, there were many occasions someone tried to “save” me. Until three years ago, I didn’t feel like I was walking with the Lord but now I do.
The late Stephen Armstrong used to say if you’re worried wether you’re “doing it right” you are doing it right.
I’m banking on that and praying he is right. 🙏
