Writing Prompts

Halloween-Challenge Accepted

I’m going to join writer Ravenclaw with the Halloween challenge.

As I walked through the forest in the fog at daybreak, the trees took on a spectral image and as I walked, I wondered should I be frightened or was it just my imagination.

I was on my way to school and I had my earmuffs on, as well as my sweater, because it was the 8th of October and very chilly that morning. It was for this reason that I never heard the crunch of leaves behind me. I was still contemplating the creepy look of the trees when I felt the hairs on the back of my neck prickle.

Slowly, I turned and was chilled to the bone to see a wolf, teeth bared, and growling lowly. I stopped in my tracks, too afraid to move. Just then, the fog grew thicker and the wind picked up, swirling around me like a dervish. I shut my eyes, and when I opened them again, the wind had stopped and the wolf had gone. The fog had lifted and I ran the rest of the way to school, just praying the wolf had gone back to his pack, or lair…wherever they go when they aren’t stalking little girls in the woods.

When I got to school, my teacher noticed my demeanor and asked me “Whats got you so rattled child?” “I’ve had a terrible fright, sister.” I told her what happened and she said, ”You’ve witnessed a miracle, child.” I told her that may be, but I’m never walking through the foggy woods again alone. She talked of divine intervention and such things, but all I knew was I’d read the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and it didn’t end well for her. I wasn’t taking any more chances!
