Beginner Mistakes

Since I’m a complete neophyte at painting I will go ahead and share the latest attempt to paint a sunset closer to what it’s supposed to look like. Remember this one?

I’m actually happier with this even though it’s all wrong. No stars, bad palm trees, dark water.
Closer, but way too many mistakes.

I used a fine brush, but the palm trees are totally wrong and I became very frustrated. They just got bushier. My water is wrong but closer to the example I was following.
The stars were supposed to be pinpointed not blurred. The technique was to use the fan brush dipped in white paint, then sort of tap it with another brush stick, but it just went everywhere. I should have done it over the practice paper before doing it to the canvas.

More lessons learned each time, so hopefully with more practice, I’ll go from neophyte to ‘somewhat experienced’. Now I’ll show you the screenshot of the video that I’ve been using to practice.

I don’t know why I get so upset and frustrated because it’s called practice for a reason. 😉

  1. Kim its only wrong in regards to the example. It looks amazing to me. Also you worked from the heart in example one and tried way too hard in example 2. If both these pieces were submitted blindly to a show I personally think 9 out of 10 people would choose the painting you feel is “wrong”.

    1. Thank you! I have to work on those palm trees though! And getting my water effects in front of the sun where they are supposed to be. 😉

  4. I like your paintings. The reflection on the water of the painting with the stars is excellent. There’s a charm captured in your artwork. I’m looking forward to seeing more. 🙂

  6. It is called practice for a reason, and I think the example you shared are pretty good. I really like the first one. I give you credit for learning, for trying and (big time) for sharing.
