My Escape

I’ve been a voracious reader since I was very young.

Now, I don’t lay around reading books all day, but I do read a lot during the day. And I study, and sometimes do research…mainly to satisfy my curiosity, but sometimes for a writing project. I read blogs, articles, and news stories.

I’m enjoying reading/studying the Bible very much. John was so good, and this morning we started Acts. I thought we’d go to Luke, but I guess he comes later. He did, however write the book of Acts also. I love the Verse by Verse sermons that explain the chapter I just read in so much more detail. I wish I could encourage more of you to just check at least one out. Pick a verse in John for example, then go to that verse in the Verse by Verse app and listen to the explanation of the verse you picked. You won’t believe how much better you will understand it.

As for entertainment, I just read The Flight Attendent, which was a series I watched on Amazon first. Again, so much more detail and I realized that the series took quite a few artistic liberties. Cassie is not quite the blond bimbo they make her out to be, but she does have a drinking problem. I also discovered that the author has many other books under his belt, but I tried a sample of one and found it too difficult for me to unweave.

When I was writing my story about the Avalanche in Colorado, I did quite a bit of research about Arvada. And when I was studying to be a transcriptionist, that required a lot of it. (I haven’t finished the course, but I will someday). You probably know I love learning languages also, I’m getting along good so far with my Portuguese, it’s mashup of Spanish and French is so interesting!

Maybe someday when I am even older than I am now, I will feel ok with the thought of curling up in a comfy chair, with a blanket and cup of something warm and tasty nearby, and while away the hours with a good book.

Until then, I’ll stay with my Bible in the morning and a good novel at night. I read from my Libby app on my iPad, so I have to be careful to lay it down when I get sleepy, lest I get a bloody nose.

Next on my list? Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. It was going to be If It Bleeds by Stephen King, but it’s on hold for at least a month. I either pick by an interesting title, an author I know but haven’t read, or a recommendation. Those are my favs, and it’s how I heard about “Where the Crawdads Sing and Fifty Shades of Gray.”

What are your thoughts? I know there are many other bookworms out there like me! Is reading also your escape from the real world?

  2. Reading is definitely my escape from the real world. I have a poem that actually goes into depth about this.

It calms me, helps me relax, and lessens my anxiety when I’ve had a troublesome day.

I meditate and read my Bible in the early morning hours.

I’ve never tried meditating but I heard it works.

  4. I recently finished one called The Purgatory Hotel which I took no time to read. It was good. I am now reading a Supers/Black Cape/Black Noire Private Eye/Fantasy/Sci-Fi. It is quite the combination and it is good. Like really good. I have the 2nd book in the series already. 🙂

      3. I may use the Libby app. Right now, I am trying to finish a sequel to my first novel “The Bayou Heist.” It follows up the story of Faith and Timothy along with Nick, now living on an island.

  6. Where it today again that you get the verse by verse discussion? I’m listening to a true crime story from my favorite author Karen Kingsbury. She wrote true crime stories before it started writing Christian fiction! Very interesting!! This first book that I have tried out is called “The Snake and Spider”. I am almost halfway through it. Very interesting, and it is keeping me interested! I have 2 more of her true crime stories in the works to read! Not something that I think I would like to always read, but I will support her! It is nice to see how you got her start in writing!

    1. I like true crime stories too. I’m a big fan of Dateline and 20/20.
The Verse by Verse discussions are in an app. Download Verse by Verse wherever you get your apps, and scroll down until you get to The Gospel of John (or whatever corresponds to the Bible verse you’re reading.) listen to the lesson. So much more detail as he breaks down every sentence, sometimes every word!

  9. I love researching things, too. I love learning.

I’m glad you’ve found a church you love. It’s important, I think, to read verse by verse. The gospels are wonderful. My very favorite books in the Bible are Daniel, Ephesians, and Galations. That sounds like a cool app! I’m going to download it.

I’ve not read The “Flight Attendent.” But it sounds good. I liked “Where the Crawdads Sing.”

Reading is definitely an escape for me. 🩷🌺

    1. You will love that book!!
Yes, Stephen Armstrong is so great at explaining -sometimes in infinite detail-what the verse means, its history, backstory, literal meaning of some Hebrew and Greek words, etc. I’m really enjoying my daily reading and studying of the scriptures this way.
I’m in Romans now (studying the NIV) and it’s a serious, repetentance kind of book so far, hopefully it gets more upbeat as we go. I’m only in chapter two (verse two dissected in two parts). Get the app, you will love it!

  13. I read books and ebooks for research, but I listen to audiobooks for pleasure. It helps to separate them that way, I find.

  14. I read a lot, but it takes me forever to read anything…I re-read, I guess I read slow?….and I don’t know if I’m the only one that does this, I’ll be reading something, find and buy another book I really want to get to…and either start reading both at the same time, or rush through the first one…..

  17. I love this post! I’m also a big reader, and I agree—there’s nothing like diving into a great book and discovering all the details you miss in shows or movies. I just finished Where the Crawdads Sing too—such a beautiful story! Reading really is the perfect escape, though lately, I’ve been taking breaks to work on some cabinet refacing projects at home. It’s oddly therapeutic, kind of like reading in its own way!
