SoCS-Burro Fest at Mancos

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “sum.” Use the letters “sum” in a word in your post or use the word “sum.” Enjoy!

How do I sum up the fun activities and spectacle that is burro fest? A cultural experience for sure!!

First, there was the obstacle course that the brightly decorated burros had to “run” through. That was more cute than anything, but we had to miss the parade part because it took a long time for Dave to find a place to park and then walk several blocks to get to where he dropped me off.

Then imagine scores of people surrounding a hole on the televised golf tournament to understand how hard it was to see anything!! We finally found a hole to peek through and got a few cute pics.

After the course was won, we made our way to the vendors on Main street in search of fry bread. I forgot to photo that lady, but man was that tasty! It was similar to a funnel cake but thinner and crispy, right out of the pan!

Mine had powdered sugar, cinnamon and honey!

Once those were eaten-1/2 one each-we returned to the Indian art gallery we had visited before, told the proprietor/artist that we loved the fry bread and started looking around. I’m so glad we went back. They had an authentic American Indian basket weaver, I took pics and video.

Also, an amazing American Indian artist who crafted wooden tribal gods. He explained in detail but the creativity is hard to describe. Remember, these are wood carvings!

Dave bought me a beautiful authentic horsehair bracelet with a tiny cross charm.

We also purchased some items and got a couple of freebies for Rayven while at the festival. Another shop I went into was an art gallery also, and had an exhibit featuring these wonderful glass bowls that he played beautiful tones on. I wish the video feature worked.

The old printing press was another exhibit, and I even got to use one to print a cute little momento. Of course, these were what used to print the town newspaper from the 1600’s to the 1970’s.

Excuse my hair, it was very windy! I never realized it had separated like that, boy my roots need to be done! I know I was smiling too but Dave snapped the photos when I was just getting started. 😂

On top of everything else, I got ducked too!

We summed up the day back at Chavalo’s with a tasty tostada -Dave had enchilada-and a frozen beverage. Margaritas of course.

A side note or two. This really did start out as a Stream of Conciousness post to start, then I had difficulty loading the photos and now it’s early evening. I hope Linda doesn’t fine me for that. 😉🤣

Those who follow me on Facebook can see the videos I can’t display here.

    1. It really was, Anne! So much rich culture to observe and absorb in one afternoon too! We were so busy, I forgot to revisit one of the art galleries we’d been to the weekend before, but they were all busy! That’s a great thing for the little town of Mancos.

  1. It looks like you had a great day. Basket weaving has always fascinated me. It’s amazing what they can do.
