SoCS – A Disservice?

Dave and I on a ship in San Diego

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “ship.’” Use it as a noun, a verb, or slang … or all three! Enjoy!

I was thinking last night about whether or not I’ve been doing you, my friends and followers a disservice. I mean, my readership has grown on my Substacks, yet here it seems to be limited to what I lovingly call my “regulars”.

So can I ask you openly, when you first came to my blog, before it was renamed and repurposed, were you drawn to my creative writing, my stories, poems, and answers to challenges? Have I now become just a daily diary that’s boring for those who don’t know me as well, or is there some other reason I’m not growing?

I love sharing our travels, but maybe it’s too much of me, me, me and not enough about what I love, admire, observe, and learn. You tell me.

My writing on Substack-two pubs, Bedtime Snacks and Fifty Word Fiction-is all creative writing and I do engage quite a bit with others, which grows all of our readership. I thought I was doing the same here too, but I now realize that I too have my “regulars” that I mostly follow.

So maybe this stream has answered its own questions. Are we then like two ships passing in the night? Me staying here being comfy while you and others are reaching out to grab more and more opportunities?

Give me some feedback if you dare

And I’ll not go on without a care

I shall contemplate my methods to grow

And seeds of creativity I’ll try to sow.

  1. When I 1st started reading your blog which was many moons ago it was to learn more about you! And now I can still hear me getting to learn with you when you speak about your travels, your hobbies, and your friendships! Makes me feel like I am getting to travel with you. But I do love your creative writing! Of course I love hearing the Sunday message as it gives me a glimpse into what you are learning spiritually, and it also gives me a different perspective of things that I had not maybe thought about before! I like it all, and do not give up!

    1. No ma’am, I wont. I just want to make sure I keep things interesting and I wasn’t saying that I don’t love my regulars. I do, but I just realized that y’all are getting less of my creative side so I need to work on that too. Maybe make it more like a story instead of just writing like a diary.

  2. I enjoy the things you write and have no suggestions for changing them. I have no idea what people are looking for. I’m happy with the responses I get on my blog, but I don’t have many people who stick around and chat.

    1. Yes, me too, and I was in no way saying anything negative about my regulars. I love you all. I just haven’t been growing, but then again, its hard to manage with what I’ve got. Maybe I should be careful what I wish for. 😆

  3. I’m relatively new as a follower. I don’t feel slighted in any way. This is an interesting blog. You write about things I know very little about, so I learn when I visit. There’s something to be said for having regulars.

    1. I don’t think of you as new, Dan. I feel like we’ve known each other a while! We learn a lot about each other through our blogs!
PS-im liking Rascal Todd so far! I mean Bridge to Nowhere.

      1. I’m glad to hear that, Kim. Both about not being new and your enjoying the book.

In any case, you are not doing a disservice to your readers. You’re currently doing something a lot of people think about. I enjoy reading about that.

You might try sharing some of your creative material here.

  5. If you want, you could try switching it up a bit here: fiction, microfiction, poetry, and blog entries about your travels and your life.

When one writes about the same thing all the time, if there’s no flair or spark or interesting tidbits outside of the norm, it’s hard to grow/gain more traction.

But overall, really, WordPress feels like it’s at a standstill. So you could very well make all the changes you want and this current environment of WordPress could remain the same.

Question is really, what DO YOU think you should do?

    1. I should probably visit more new bloggers sites and follow them if I like them. So many out there just want to make a buck, they aren’t interested in the creative side. But good ones are out there too.

  6. I can’t remember when I first started following your blog, but it was under a different name and you posted a lot about the Keto diet. That was kind of interesting but I mostly just liked when you told personal day to day stuff, plus your takes on different challenges. Same as now, I like how you are so outgoing and seem to make new friends everywhere you go. I like that, and I like seeing photos of the places you visit. Keep doing what you do. 🙂

  7. I like the feeling I’m visiting with you. Two friends just chatting about our lives. I find reading other blogs a challenge to my eyes. After I do all my Duolingo, music, diamond painting, I’m ready to shut down. Sometimes, I venture out in the blogosphere and yours is one of the first I check in on. It might be the only so… Just eye issues. And because of that I don’t read stories and the like online. It’s why I feel I need to move to podcasts and podcasting and narrating. So it’s isn’t anything but my eyes and energy that keeps me here. ❤️🤗

    1. I appreciate you so much for that! I’ll try to keep it simple then and anything else I can do to help I will!
