Once upon a time, I worked in the medical field.

I was a certified phlebotomist, having acquired the certification a few years after my stint in the Army. The first job after getting back home was at a local hospital, but my supervisor was ex-military, so he didn’t require my certification. I was also allowed to do MLT jobs like blood and urine analysis without a license. Alton was a really cool boss.

After the Medicare rules changed, that job ended and I worked in a non-medical job as a mailroom clerk, until that job ended and before I could go apply for a new job as a phlebotomist, I was told I had to get certified. More positions came and went and then I found the job that lasted until I ”took early retirement” to preserve my sanity.

I do miss my job in the medical field, and the best boss ever, the late Kathleen Ferguson, but things have changed so much in the field that I don’t like or want to do that I don’t know if I could ever go back to it. Besides, my certification ran out years ago…before my last job at the cancer center, as a matter of fact. I told you, Kathy was the best boss ever! She never required it of me either, she made me stick her! I did such a good job (she was said to be a hard stick) she hired me on the spot because of all my years of experience and because of my military training. Sometimes, experience counts more than a piece of paper!
