SoCS About Time!

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “starts with ‘ab’.” Find a word that starts with “ab” and use it in your post. Enjoy!

About time we started getting out and exploring more of Port Aransas! I abhor being bored or inactive. But this week has been museum week!

Yesterday, we went to the Port Aransas Museum, part of the Preservation and Historical Association. What a history lesson we got about our favorite town! Normally, I’m not all about history, but when explained with visuals it’s so fun and interesting. We thought we knew this place after coming here for 30+ years. Yet we’ve learned more on this trip than ever because we’ve had much longer to hang out and learn.

This museum has well-trained owners or volunteers that have the ability to weave wonderful stories into the history of this place. I had no idea how long this place has been here or how it was formed, changes by storms, improvements to the shipping industry, etc. We learned more about wooden Farley Boats and their family history. We learned more about the light in the Lydia Ann Lighthouse. It came from France for one thing.

The most fascinating fact is about the jetties. It had been tried before but failed. Finally they brought in immigrants to do the backbreaking work building the jetties. They are constructed of limestone and granite boulders that had to be pushed -by hand- into the water hundreds of yards. It took four years. They weight tons, these boulders. It’s mind boggling.

I’m not about to relay everything we learned, and unfortunately, the only pic I got was of the book I bought, which answered all my burning questions about the beach, it’s animals and grasses, and how almost everything in the ocean is alive.

Great book, if not short. Took me about an hour!

Here’s a gallery from Dave’s phone of the last couple of days museum tours.

We’ve also visited shops and boutiques, the pottery place, and had lunch in a new place. It’s been a good week. Now to go start the weekend by finishing my rocks! Stay tuned!
