The Sunday Message

It’s Ok to Ask Questions

Today’s message is based on Romans 9:14-24

Do we have the right to question God?

No, but that’s not the same as asking questions to better understand God.

Recently, we had Norm and Renda over for dinner and I asked him how it was fair that God chose Esau to be hated before he even came out of the womb. He didn’t even stand a chance but there was a reason.

The way I understand it, and you can correct me if I’m wrong, is to prove that although we have free will, no one can be judged based on his good works.God is sovereign; therefore He can do no wrong. He cannot be unjust.

I know, I didn’t explain that right because it still isn’t making sense.

11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand:
12 not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”fn
13 Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”fn
14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!
15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”fn
16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”fn
18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

There. There is the explanation. I read it before but after today’s sermon, I understand it. Finally. It’s God’s. Choice to extend mercy and to whom He will do so.

Sometimes it takes awhile to get through this thick head of mine.

Like pastor Kevin said, “Just because we may not understand, doesn’t mean God is not God. It just means we don’t understand.”

And we aren’t meant to understand everything or then we would be sovereign also. There can only be one -yet I am happy for that!!

(Full disclosure) This song isn’t for everyone but it says exactly the truth of what I’m saying and it’s one of my favorites, plus, it shows the lyrics. Give it a fair shot; it may grow on ya!
